Photos
All the photos on this website have been taken at Laikenbuie
If you have any to share please Email them to us and the best will be included. Red squirrels and fluffy lambs are a popular subject, but lichens, insects, reptiles, lower plants and fungi are just as important and probably have a better chance of being posted.
Then and Now
1988 and 2023
There has been a huge increase in the amount of trees since the Muskuses arrived here in the early eighties. To show the area of trees around the pond and beyond a drone photo has been added. Use the tractor ruts on the left and New Arr buildings near the skyline to compare the photos.
The Riches at Our Feet by Kate Ashton.
From everywhere – social media, news media, radio and television, books, film and podcast – we are being bombarded with bad news about our natural environment. It is easy to become numb and deaf to it all. To lose heart and stop believing that the little we can each do to help is too little, too late.
Yes, it is true that Nature is losing the battle with modernity, that our wildflower meadows, bird and insect populations have become dramatically diminished over the past half a century or so. The more we care about these things, the harder it is not to fall into despondency and the more we need to be reminded of our need for courage and creativity.
This woodland walk will reveal why we must act in faith; believe, hope and learn of the resilience and riches of the natural world and claim our place in ensuring its future. See how two individuals can commit their lives to nurturing a humble portion of our precious planet until it is restored to the fullness of natural beauty and potential you see and feel about you today.
And understand how this is not a short-lived recovery, but one of immense energy, dynamism and sustainability. One that will outlive us all. The Laikenbuie Ecology Trust is just that – the clue is in the name. On this walk we shall see just what trust can do. How faith in the natural world has helped birth the huge wealth of flora and fauna now inhabiting this lovely glen.
It is an inspiring story. A story of small beginnings leading to very great gains. Of the long search for treasure at the end of the rainbow, and finding it at our feet.
